Wild About Blueberries

Posted on June 22, 2019May 31, 2020 by Laddie

Blueberries are one of my favorite berries. My tribe loves it too. And who wouldn’t? This blue-ish purple berry is high in Vitamin K, Manganese, Vitamin C, Fiber, and Copper. They also have a low glycemic index and it’s only 80 calories for 1 cup of fresh blueberries.

Blueberries have long been valued by their unique anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. I’ve heard that they are great for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Spinach is another great vegetable for RA.

We are blessed to have a locally grown blueberry farm near us where we can pick fresh, delicious blueberries from the bushes. TLC Blueberry Farm is also pesticide free!! I love that it’s safe for my boys to eat the blueberries while picking them. The farm grows 5 different varieties to extend the picking season. We usually just pick the Premier Blueberries. This variety produces fruit of excellent color, size, and flavor. And of course they are blue-tiful!

The other 4 varieties of Rabbiteye blueberry plants are: Powderblue, Tifblue, Climax, and Brightwell.

We first took the in-laws to visit the farm. I think our party was a little reluctant at first. The kiddos were complaining from the get-go. Mr. Simplyladdie supplied them with $1.00 snow cones and that kept them content for a while. It was really HOT but everyone made an effort to pick a few blueberries. I was proud of them all.

Mostly Premier Blueberries

After picking roughly 5 lbs. of fruit, we headed back to join my in-laws. They took the boys to the playground and enjoyed blueberry ice cream in the shade. The farm has a pond, where you can have a picnic lunch. The kids can feed the ducks in the pond and feed the chickens in their coop.

The in-laws relaxing in the shade and watching the boys.

If you’re feeling froggy next Saturday, go pick some blueberries!! It’s your last chance until next season. Look for I found in one of the blueberry bushes!
